I fuck with Kelly Rowland on occasion - the singles, at least - but she’s always fallen just short of some invisible mark that kept her from being anything really spectacular as a solo artist.
That being said, she did her thing on ‘Dirty Laundry’ - basically, if she wanted this new album to get attention, she got her wish because it’s fucking everywhere. It’s sparse, it’s direct and it took a damn lot of humility to admit that she was jealous of Beyoncé and most of all, to admit she’d been in an abusive relationship.
I don’t know why, that being said, that I still feel like I’ve been taken for a ride. The confessions are deep, yes, but the extreme frankness almost seems to be a show and tell, an effort to outdo, out-say, to finally come out on top. Of course, that’s probably just my own cynicism getting in the way there. I guess honesty is pretty therapeutic for us as humans.
Whatever. It’s a really good song.
